the fire is now 30% contained. how did it start? the initial report from a resident it was a controlled burn that got out of control. but a spokeswoman said they were not doing any controlled burns but that does not mean a private citizen is burning vegetation, if so that is illegal. investigators are working to figure out if that was the cause. if a citizen was burning vegetation in the area. cal fire says so far it is only that brush has burned. no vines in the area. 3 homes threatened at this hour in napa county. reporting live, mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. >> now to our chief meteorologist bill martin. how are the conditions effecting the fire? >> we had a rain a while ago but the winds are strong.

there is a wind advisory in effect. the first thing i noticed from the story here, topography play as big part. a stuff, rough area with vertical ridge lines there, tough to get at. we have got wind out of the north. to the map, i will show you where the fire is. the winds are coming across the ridge. gusts up to 20 miles per hour, 30 miles per hour near the fire zone. 13% humidity, 70 degrees temperatures. any firefighter will tell you, even this time of year, any wind will create an issue for firefighters. winds are blowing, the wind advisory has been extended till 10:00 today. i will be back here, we will

talk about your weather forecast. the search for victims of the so-called "speed freak killers" moved once again. investigators moved from the loans to calvarus county. this is near san andres. ktvu's 10-p is live with this unexpected turn. >> reporter: that search is taking place a quarter mile down this gravel road. earlier today we saw what appeared to be a forensic's van heading down the road hours after the search began. they are only saying the such is part of an ongoing investigation. >> sheriff's suv blocked the road so we couldn't get close but that doesn't mean that we -- >> yellow? evidence tags.

or they couldn't see that search. >> people digging. people pulling brush out. the brush is heavy. you can see, investigators walking down. this is a canyon. she heard them exshame. >> we are successful. and that is when they started digging some more. >> reporter: earlier two remains were found in this same area. investigators led here by a map drawn by wesley shermantine who along with loren herzog are believed to have killed 20 people. the map pointed to abandon wells. one well already excavated contained a thousand bone fragments. neighbors say she is not surprised. >> no. not at all. jobless claims remains at low. 351,000 people filed claims last year. that is the same as the week before. the figures provide evidence the job market is continuing to improve. california had the biggest decrease, down 8500 from the previous week. san francisco mayor is leading an effort to make housing more affordable. he wants to increase the number of homes for moderate wage earners. the mayor is looking for other ways to create a $50 million a year housing trust fund. he is hoping to have a proposal in november. stocks ended on a high today. the markets rose after the unemployment report. the s&p is up 6 to 1,363. close to a 4 year high. the dow is up 46 points to 12,985. the nasdaq is up 24 to 2,957. tomorrow we will get the latest

. we continue a follow developing news. a fire in napa county. we have new information from cal fire. we got couple minutes ago. this fire at soda canyon road and silverado trail grown to 35 acres and 50% contained. those are the newest numbers we have. our chief meteorologist bill

martin is monitoring the conditions. we will check in with him in a moment. close call for a woman in san francisco who was trapped under a muni street car. ktvu's sal castaneda is live with pictures of how she was rescued. and how she got there. >> reporter: you can see the cars are running again. just about caught up on schedule after a pedestrian ended up underneath a train. the woman will come out of it with just cuts and bruises. >> reporter: at first it didn't look good for the woman. at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon, the woman was trying to get to the other side by stepping over the coupling, in between trains with her dog. a very dangerous maneuver. >> as she went to cross, her dog couldn't make it over the

coupling, he lifted the dog up to take him over and at that point that is when it moved westbound. the woman became trapped and dragged a short distance, ending up stuck underneath the train. firefighters had to use jax to lift the train up. witnesses said they didn't expect the woman to survive. >> she was down. i was happy to see her. i told her what happened? >> reporter: as the rescue continued a crowd gathered, watching firefighters. >> took 15-20 minutes for them to lift the train enough to remove her. as they slid her out applause from both sides. there were almost 100 people while this happened. >> reporter: that woman was taken to the hospital and,

again, she is -- considering what happened, her injuries will be minor after what happened. trapped underneath the car. sal castaneda, ktvu channel 2 news. police say the woman in surveillance footage is responsible for stealing a donation jar. they were collecting money and planning on a trip to india to deliver the donation. it happened on tuesday. that same day another business reported its donation jar had also been stolen. police have not said if they are connected but if you recognize this woman, contact police. a family will return from their vacation to a loss after a fire gutted their home. a neighbor saw flames over night and called sunshine 11. fire crews were concerned the four people were caught in the

fire. the cars were in the driveway but a search turned up no sign of anyone inside the house and officials learned the family is away in china. >> devastated by the loss of their home but we have good news, no one was inlunch and everybody was safe. the only thing we loss was the structure. >> the investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire. thousandsthousands of pg&e customers lost power because a seagull flew into the wires. it touchupped two power lines. it killed the bird and knocked out power ta6600 customers. crews had power back by 8:30 and 12:30 and they replaced one of the lines with an insulated wire to protect birds. our coverage of the developing story in wine country.

our chief meteorologist bill martin joins us. talking about the fire. >> wind advisory is a big deal. the winds allowed the fire to move around. we have live video. i don't have any new information but i have to say, in looking at the pictures, it does look as though the smoke is diminishing. the smoke, this is a smaller fire here, it t was vertical, and then it layed down. the winds have really began to howl. wind gusts 25, 35 miles per hour. napa area, north at 17. winds stay strong into the evening hours. this is what you get in the atmosphere, beautiful, clear conditions. i was in the east bay hills today, by the observatory, you see the sierra nevada from here. that doesn't happen all the

we continue a follow developing news. a fire is burning out of control. you see fire crews on the scene in napa county, soda canyon road and silverado trail. they are working on very difficult terrain. there are winds to think about and as well we have been dry for the past several months. mike mibach is on the ground, we will check in with him at 5:30. a first of its kind military industry. >> we are making progress with rebuilding our flights of cutters, aircrafts and boats. >> he delivered the first state of the coast guard speech away from washington, d.c. they are now assigned to coast guard island and he says the service needs more ships like them.

complete bay area news coverage continues, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00. following developing news in the north bay. a wildfire is burning out of control. we have ben monitoring the story. -- been monitoring the story. ktvu's mike mibach is on the scene. let's go live to mike for the newest information. >> reporter: i did obtain new information. a spokeswoman called me 5 minutes ago and told me the fire burned about 35 acres and 50% contained. three homes are still threatened. you can see the peak in the distance. the smoke is coming up from the fire. the first call came in at 12:32. when they arrived on scene, a

dozen acres have burned. crews got on the scene immediately. 140 firefighters on the ground trying to contain the fire. they sent two choppers on the fire. no aircrafts up there because cal fire says they weren't ready, it is february, they weren't expecting a fire. if the fire gets more out of control and they can't get more containment, they will launch the planes if need be. there was a report from the person who called about the fire this was a controlled burn that got out of control. cal fire said they weren't doing controlled burns. the same goes for the napa fire department. it doesn't mean a private citizen was burning vegetation and then it got out of control. that is illegal. there are investigators up there on the scene trying to determine the cause. we have another crew up closer to the fire. they will feed me information

i can't think of why anyone would want to hurt him. >> reporter: every sunday he would go out for ice cream. police are asking anyone who knows anything to give them a call. reporting live, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. police are investigating four shootings that happened in an 11 hour period. first was last night at 9:14. two hours later together one and then at 2:00 a.m. and the most recent at 8:00 p.m. this morning. an 18-year-old was shot riding his bicycle. the conditions of the victims range from critical to grave. investigators do not believe they are related. police haven't released any motive and have not arrested any suspects. the police department is reaching out tathe community for help. -- reaching outlet to the community for help.
